Manchester United have revived their search for a left-back creating further uncertainty over the long-term future of Patrice Evra.
The 31-year-old Frenchman has been in good form this season, also scoring four goals, which has prompted talk of a one year extension to his contract which runs out in 2014.
However, United scouts watched Porto left-back Alex Sandro in the recent Champions League tie against Malaga and plan to look at others in the position before the season ends.
United have reservations about the defensive capabilities of Evra and have studied several candidates to replace him. Everton's Leighton Baines has long been liked but his £15m valuation means an offer has yet to materialise.
United signed Alexander Buttner for £4m from Vitesse Arnhem in the summer but he has played just 10 games with only two in the Premier League. Evra has been linked with Paris St Germain, former club Monaco and Fiorentina but is eager to stay at Old Trafford.
