Barcelona are upgrading their quest for Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels, in accordance with Spanish magazine Marca. Barcelona leader Sandro Rossell suggested at the club's interest in the Germany international, but refused to mention the Dortmund star in case his price skyrocketed. The La Liga leaders are storming to another league concept this season, with the only question mark on the team in defence. They have been linked by speculation with a move for a number of centre-backs, with Hummels thought to be the top goal. And speaking to German TV station 'ZDF', Barca president Rossell said: "There is just a German player I like greatly, but I can not give his name because if we go for him in the end, his value may go up." Curiosity about the defense was described by German paper Sport Bild, and the report in Marca now claims a shift is edging closer while the period draws to a detailed. A contract extension was recently penned by carles Puyol at the Nou Camp, but the Catalan team will require a long-term substitute in place. Gerard Pique continues to impress while Javier Mascherano has deputised at centre-back, even though Argentine is much more comfortable in midfield. Consquently, a shift for a defender this year is considered to be a priority for Barcelona, and Hummels looks like the goal. But Manchester United are also linked with the highly ranked Dortmund centre-back, and come early july competition could be faced by the Spanish side from Old Trafford for his signature. Former-Barca boss Pep Guardiola is set to take the reigns at Bayern Munich next time, and Rossell had his say how he thinks he will do in the Bundesliga. "When I learned about the signing, I congratulated Guardiola and Rummenigge because I believe it is the smartest choice for both parties," said Rossell. "With tolerance and if they really believe in it, Bayern could also implement it [a youth policy like Barca's] efficiently. With Guardiola they'll are in possession of someone who will help increase that method. Pep understands how it works."
